Let's be honest—gift shopping can be a big challenge sometimes. Some people are just hard to buy for, and it can be tempting to get the first thing you see that reminds you of them and call it a day. (I've definitely been guilty of doing this in the past, so don't worry—you're not alone.)

But those gifts tend to be tchotchkes and trinkets which become, as my mom likes to call them, "dust collectors"—and in this day and age, when so many people are aspiring to live with less (even if they're not going for full-on minimalism), they're just not good gifts. It's not that the recipients don't appreciate them—they're still thoughtful, after all. It's just that, after a while, these gifts tend to just sit around taking up space, not providing much value or use other than the fact that they look pretty and have sentimental ties.

So, without further ado, here's your new gift shopping mantra—the attitude that will totally change the way you shop for other people: "No clutter."

Why "No Clutter" is Your New Gift-Giving Mantra

If you really want to be a great gift giver, you have to focus less on "does this thing remind me of the person I'm shopping for?" — which just results in more sentimental clutter — and more on "will this person get use out of this in some way?," or even "will this help the person I'm shopping for make happy memories?"

Instead, give the people on your list things they can use, things they need, things they'll enjoy and things that won't leave clutter in their wake. You can be sure that you buy them something they will actually use and love by checking if they have an Amazon wish list and ordering something from it, but if that's not an option, stick to things like gift cards, food or experiences — be they experiences to share with you or with someone they love

Follow the "no clutter" mantra, and you're sure to become a better—and even more thoughtful—gift giver in no time.
