Here at AT DC, we've been on an Obama/White House decor kick. So we were thrilled to find the National Geographic's blog The Green Room advising the Obamas to buy green mattresses for the White House. Green mattresses are made of materials like organic cotton and natural latex, which are wrapped untreated wool. These materials are resistant to dust-mites so are great for folks with allergies. More on green mattresses and tips for buying one below the jump...

National Geographic's "The Green Guide" recommends mattresses made with untreated wool, either as a wrap or core, as the best choice. The second choice is organic cotton because although it's just as eco-friendly as wool, organic cotton is not inherently fire-resistant. Untreated organic cotton mattresses that do not have flame-retardant chemicals applied to them do not comply with Consumer Product Safety Commission flammability standards.
The Green Guide has this handy chart comparing various green mattress options.
