1. A Natural Nook

A little—or, okay, a lot—of nature inside goes a long, long way. Just take a look at Emily Barry’s plant-filled place.

You don’t have to invest in houseplants to make this happen, though. Whether you’re collecting seashells at the beach or pressing leaves from the maple tree outside, keep your eyes peeled for especially noteworthy finds. You never know when inspiration will strike.

2. Bottle it Up

This just in: You don’t need to buy new vases or decor. Upcycling old glass bottles from beer, kombucha, or wine will get the job done just fine. Bonus points if you can find different colored bottles à la this boozy bungalow.

4. An Artful Eye

The internet is full of free printable art. These can come straight from artists’ websites or the like (just double check permissions and copyrights to make sure it’s OK to download and use). 5. DIY Decor

Want to freshen up your bedsheet game? Give your current sheets an upgrade. Tie-dye is back and easy to execute, but you can also make your own hand-printed designs with dye. Don’t want to buy conventional dye? You’d be surprised how much color you can get out of natural sources, like beets.

7. Bring out Your Bookworm

Sure, books aren’t “free,” but you can still add to your collection on the cheap if needed. Books can be arranged strategically to conceal unsightly things like routers and cables or just to bring the rights pops of color to a certain spot in the home.
