Any significant redesign of popular services like Facebook or Gmail is going to bring a percentage of naysayers hating change. I personally thought the most recent upgrade to Gmail's UI was a big jump forward, but apparently some people still want yesterday's more information compact (or cluttered, depending upon your perspective) user interface. Blogger Jason Crawford outlines step-by-step how to recreate a close semblance of the pre-redesign Gmail...

The transformation requires the following steps, all which eliminate the more minimalist-open feel of the redesign:

  • Change display density to Compact
  • Change theme to High Contrast
  • Set Importance markers to "No markers"
  • Change Button labels to Text
  • Disable "web clips"
