We posted some advice we found in recent house tours earlier today in the post, Keep It Simple, Be Patient: Advice For Creating a Warm & Livable Home. Apartment Therapy reader Khat had an amazing addition to that list of advice. She writes...

Furnish and decorate for yourself alone — not according to what the decorating magazines (and blogs) say is "right" or wrong" or what's "in" or not. The instant you find yourself wondering what other people might think — s.t.o.p. Back up and try again. What feels comfortable to you? What makes you feel good?

And try different stuff — move your furniture around, hang things on your walls, try this and that and then something else. I find that my home is an on-going process, always changing. My main advice: don't be afraid to try something different — especially color, texture, design, shape. So many people live with little matching end tables and beige walls because they're scared to express themselves. (With heartfelt apologies to those who like matching end tables and beige walls — if it's done deliberately and not simply out of indecisiveness and fear, go for it!)

Thanks Khat!
