Ever since Pinterest has become the search engine of choice for people in need of creative ideas, we've been turning to the data there — like the annual Pinterest 100 list — for insight on what people are searching for in order to discover how to live their best lives.
This year, there was a major uptick in searches for "self care" — up 537 percent over last year, which is, well... massive. Apparently we could all use a little me time with everything going on in the world and our lives. The answer? A staycation.
5 Steps to the Perfect Self-Care Staycation
This isn't about vacationing in your own city, so you can skip the guidebooks and hotel recommendations. What makes a self-care staycation different from a regular staycation is that the only place you need to explore is your own mind.
Imagine the best vacation you've ever had, and picture just the moments you spent lounging back at the hotel. That pampered, relaxed, at-ease attitude is what we're trying to capture here.
Disconnect and Set OOO Messages
"OOO" means "out of office," and if you didn't know that, it's definitely time for you to learn. Even though you're staying home, you should set up email auto-replies letting anyone who dares contact you know that you'll circle back with them in a few days. And if you really want to maximize your mental solitude, leave your phone on airplane mode — just pretend you're in an international roaming zone and tell yourself everything can wait.
Take Charge of Housekeeping
To really feel relaxed at home, you need to start with a neat and tidy space — think about how good it feels to walk into a freshly cleaned hotel room. If you can swing it, now is a great moment to outsource to professional housekeepers. (P.S. this is absolutely something you can book as a one-off on Amazon if you don't have any good local recs for housekeeping.) And if pro cleaning is not in the cards, no sweat — just kick off your staycation with a swift cleaning session. Clear any cluttered surfaces, make your bed and freshen up your space with a bouquet of cut flowers and mints on the pillows.
Become Your Own Spa
I mean, self care and face masks go hand-in-hand these days, yeah? Pop thee into the nearest CVS or Target and snatch up a few $2 face masks or bath bombs or whatever beauty buy delights your senses. Light your favorite scented candle and turn your bathroom or living room or bedroom or balcony into the hottest yet most affordable spa in the city.
Let Room Service Handle the Meals
Room service, in this case, is Postmates or Uber Eats or Seamless or whatever app you usually trust to bring takeout right to your door. Or if cooking relaxes you, plan a meal of your own. Skip the hurried grocery store trip and treat yourself to mail-order groceries. We tried five different ones and Peapod gets our vote.
Take a Souvenir With You
What's a vacation without a souvenir? To add the cherry on top of a perfect staycation, give yourself permission to buy a little motivating trinket to remind you that you can be confident and in-control, all you need is a little "me time."
