Earlier this month we covered how to track family members using the Family Tracker app, but what if you wanted to secretly track someone without having to install an app on their iPhone? We can't be held responsible for any repercussions you may face should the person you're tracking find out what you're up to, however after reading this you'll also know how to check your phone to see if anyone may be tracking you. Here is a sneaky little how to using MobileMe and the Find My iPhone app.
Apple's own iPhone app called "Find My iPhone" was made to help you track your phone in case it ever got lost or stolen. With this how to you can easily set it up to keep track of someone else's device using GPS on the iPhone/iPad, or WiFi triangulation on the iPod touch and WiFi-only iPads.
What You Need
- an iOS device
- Find My iPhone app
- MobileMe account
1. Get a MobileMe account.
We won't get into whether MobileMe is worth the $99 a year. It is free to try out for 60-days so that should be enough time to try this trick out. Just head to www.mobileme.com. If you're being sneaky, you want to set up an inconspicuous email address.
2. Get access to an iOS device you want to track.
You're on your own on this one. You'll need access to the person's device for one short minute.
3. Enter in your MobileMe information.
Go to / Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendars / Add Account... / MobileMe
Then enter your MobileMe account information. Leave the name blank and in the description you may want to name it something inconspicuous, i.e. email or contacts.
4. Turn on "Find My iPhone".
Make sure you turn everything else to off.
5. Download and track devices using Find My iPhone App.
On your own iOS device you can track devices using the Find My iPhone app as well as mobileme.com.
The only give away is if the person you are tracking looks at his/her Mail settings. Note: with great power comes great responsibility. Don't get yourselves into too much trouble, guys.
