How To: Sync Bookmarks Across Multiple Platforms

Sure, you can use MobileMe, but we all know times are tough and those extra dollars saved could be used for something much more awesome (like buying Maxwell's up and coming AT book!), so we've rounded up two of the most popular cloud pushers in the bookmark category; Xmarks and Mozilla's Weave (for Firefox users only). We teach you how to get both up and running, after the jump.

First, let's check out Xmarks (formerly known as Foxmarks):

The two nifty things about Xmarks it works on any type of browser - IE, Safari, or Firefox - and also doubles as a community driven recommendation engine. So, say you bookmark "Unplggd" - you'll immediately find a bunch of similar sites, as well as our rankings compared to other tech and design blogs. This is a great tool if you're a freshman in new media (aka blogs) and want to learn more about what's out there without searching too hard.

Once you install Xmarks on your main computer (via their simple add-on install on their main site), you can install it on your other computers and have it seamlessly sync to the clouds in the background.

Just make sure while installing Xmarks on another computer that you (during the setup wizard), select "Yes, I am a registered Xmarks user" and enter your Xmarks username and password. Repeat these steps on all of your computers to have them all sync your bookmarks.

Now, onto Mozilla's Weave:

Weave Sync is a prototype beta service and Firefox plug-in that's more than just a bookmark sync-tool. It also encrypts and securely synchronizes all of Firefox's settings, including browsing history, saved passwords and tabs.

Setup is a piece cake as the install is merely a Firefox add-on, which immediately prompts to help setup your main account when you click on the little sync logo in the lower-right corner of your Firefox. Select Sign In... and follow the instructions to set-up Weave. The initial sync will take about 5-10 minutes depending on how large your browsing history/bookmark folder is.

Once you're all done, install Weave on any of your other computers, sign in using your Weave user name and password and voila! All of your settings on your Firefox browser, whether it be on a PC or Mac, will now sync seamlessly and non-obtrusively in the background.

If you happen to run into any issues, please ask them below and we'll try to get back to you as soon as possible!
