Wondering what type of laundry detergent is best for your health and the environment? Want to compare the sustainability of your current shampoo to a different brand? For an answer from the experts, check out Good Guide. The researchers at Good Guide have gathered data on over 65,000 common household products, from food to toys to toothpaste, and put together a handy website and mobile app.

The company looks at three kinds of info: the health, environmental responsibility, and social responsibility of any particular product. Just point your iPhone at a barcode, scan it, and you'll get instant scores and ratings. You can also browse their website, where you can easily compare products with each other. Good Guide was founded by a UC Berkeley professor, and uses a scientifically-sound rating system, so you know you're getting good information. It's a useful tool when it's often hard to tell whether the claims a product makes on its package about being "natural" or "environmentally-friendly" are real. Check it out-- you might be surprised at what's inside your favorite things.
