As many of us begin our Labor Day weekends, victims of Hurricane Harvey are experiencing the aftermath of one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history. We've compiled a list of charitable organizations working the front lines of the rescue and recovery efforts as a resource for those looking to lend their help.

First Responders

Consider a monetary donation or volunteer opportunity with first responder organizations that are actively engaged in ongoing rescue, recovery, and relief missions.

  • Team Rubicon "is an international non-profit disaster response organization that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy disaster response teams, free of charge to communities affected by disasters across the country." See above footage of Team Rubicon in action and consider a monetary donation.
  • State Firefighters' & Fire Marshals' Association of TexasDonations are being accepted to support local fire departments and volunteer fire departments.
  • "The firefighters of Texas and volunteer fire departments across the state who are currently responding to Hurricane Harvey rescue operations and clean up are faced with many challenges including shortages of funding, support, and emergency responders. In addition to the needs of the departments, many firefighters and their families have personally suffered major losses in this disaster. It's estimated in one department alone that 80% of the firefighters have lost their homes."
  • IMANA—Islamic Medical Association of America has a monetary donation option and volunteer opportunities on their website in support of medical relief efforts for victims. They have experience providing medical relief around the world including 14 missions to Haiti in the year following the 2010 earthquake.

"IMANA Medical Relief (IMR) is facilitating the Harris County Medical Society's medical relief efforts. IMR is coordinating the registration and scheduling of potential volunteers. The medical society is overseeing the medical care of tens of thousands of evacuees, who are presently residing in many shelters throughout the county. IMR volunteers will be assisting in providing medical services at the designated shelters."

Pet and Animal First Responders

"The Houston Humane Society receives no funding from the city, the county, the state, or from any national animal welfare organizations. We have always depended solely on donations from local people who care about animals and care about the work we continue to do in the greater Houston area and surrounding counties."

  • Austin Pets Alive animal shelter is transporting and housing animal victims and are currently in need of monetary donations and those looking to adopt displaced pets.
