If you’re a keen traveler, it’s likely that you’ve heard Sweden’s Icehotel. Located in the village of Jukkasjärvi and an iconic Swedish landmark, the Icehotel is rebuilt every single winter with ice from the Torne River. The hotel has been visited by people from all over the globe and has become a bucket list destination for those who aim to seek out the ultimate winter wonderland. Now, once again, artists and creatives around the world have the opportunity to be a part of the designing and formation of Icehotel 33.

Between 40 and 45 winners will be chosen to design their very own snowy suite, flying out to Jukkasjärvi to use ice and snow as the canvas for their art. The winning designers will be given complete creative freedom, and the only requirements are that it must be their original design, the room must include a bed, and of course, everything is to be made from snow and ice. The artists will be responsible for completing their suites at Icehotel, but there is a support team on hand to give advice on design and construction, and a lighting team that assists with the lighting in the suite.

After being put on hold for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the hotel’s design competition is now open, and while most applicants will have a background in working with snow and ice, it’s not a strict requirement. Every year, the hotel invites a “rookie team” who are curious about working with ice and snow for the very first time. This group receives extra follow-ups from the design’s support team, along with tips and tricks from the other artists to help guide them with their work.

Each entry will be judged based on concept, innovation, visualization, and description. Past winning designs include Icehotel 30’s “A Night at the Theatre” suite and the “White Santorini” suite.

The competition closes on May 15 and winners will be announced on June 8. Visit to learn more.
