What would you guess is the most popular IKEA product of all time? Since opening in 1943, the Swedish furniture giant has sold thousands of different products, many of which are no longer in production. During that time, a few pieces have stood out above the rest, classic, versatile designs that have become so popular as to become almost ubiquitous.
Business Insider, from which this list of the most popular IKEA products comes from, has a bit of a disclaimer to make:
We asked IKEA to point us towards the company's most popular products of all time. These are not necessarily the best-selling overall—it's hard to calculate that since not all products are sold internationally and some have a limited release—but rather the top-selling products in an array of individual categories, like armchairs or bed frames.
So are they saying that the list isn't quite fair, since some products don't get as much of a chance as others to truly shine? Maybe. But since this list comes from IKEA itself, I think we can assume that these are the products that, over the years, have found their way to the most homes. Here, we count down the top five. For the other products that round out the list, check out Business Insider.
5: Rens Sheepskin, $29.99
The popularity of this little rug is not hard to understand: it's soft, it's fluffy, and the price is tough to beat. I had one of these in my dorm room freshman year, and it was the envy of everyone on the floor.
4: The Kallax/Expedit Shelf, Starting at $34.99
The Expedit, everyone's favorite room divider/bookcase/record storage, was discontinued in 2014, but it returned as the Kallax, with an only slightly modified design. and it is still as ubiquitous as ever.
3: Malm Bed Frame, Starting at $159
This low, minimal bed frame is a perfect complement to a modern bedroom, and it's priced just right. IKEA's current offering of the bed appears to be a little higher off the ground than previous models, and it's also available with storage drawers underneath.
2: Poäng Armchair, Starting at $79
This iconic design, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, is practically synonymous with IKEA. It's quite comfortable, with just a little bit of bounce, and boasts the clean lines of a classic mid century piece at a fraction of the price. According to Business Insider, IKEA sells 1.5 million of these every year.
1: Billy Bookcase, Starting at $29.99
Available in four colors and a myriad of sizes, Billy is one of IKEA's simplest and most versatile designs—so it's no big surprise that it's also the most popular. There's no more affordable way to line your walls, and create a little paradise surrounded by books.
