IKEA’s Pride Tote Is Back, and in a New Size
Last year, in support of the LGBTQ+ community, IKEA redesigned their classic blue FRAKTA tote as a rainbow flag, which helped raise funds and awareness for the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. This year, the Swedish furniture retailer is not only bringing back the colorful tote, but also releasing a version in a size that’s more reasonable for everyday.
Both styles honor Pride Month and International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. The large STORSTOMMA tote costs $2.99, while the small version costs $0.99, with proceeds going to local LGBTQ+ initiatives, charities, and causes chosen by IKEA stores.
The company hopes that the colorful bags encourage others to defy discrimination in all forms and encourage equality.
“At IKEA, our culture is centered on the value of togetherness. We believe equality is a human right and that everyone deserves a home where they can be themselves,” said Peter Jelkeby, Country Retail Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA UK and Ireland.
“We know that lockdown will disproportionately affect the LGBT+ community,” he added. “With many isolated from their support networks, and with Pride celebrations postponed, it has never been more important to show our support and encourage everyone to provide a safe and welcoming space for members of the LGBT+ community and ‘be someone’s home’.”
This isn’t the first time FRAKTA has gotten a makeover; collaborations with both Danish design house HAY and French fashion retailer Colette resulted in iterations of the multipurpose bag. Think of all the things you can use the rainbow version for: moving, kiteboarding, even peeing while wearing a wedding dress, and so much more.
