IKEA’s New Holiday Collection is Cute, Cozy, and Yes, Very Hygge
Are you feeling the pull to stay home and get cozy yet? We may be months away from the holiday season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get our homes prepared for lowkey hangs and cuddling up with loved ones. And that’s just what IKEA’s new holiday collection is meant for.
Dubbed VÄRMER, the limited edition collection includes holiday-inspired homeware and winter accessories that celebrate “the many ways of being together—by cooking, eating, socializing, unwinding and relaxing,” says the press release. While VÄRMER will start rolling out to IKEA stores in October, we have a first look at the items you should add to your list.
For this collection, IKEA tapped two designers with families—one in Sweden and one in Kenya—to use their home life as a starting point for their designs.
“We’ve been inspired by typical seasonal activities, like the avocado harvest, and getting together for a cup of mulled wine. On the whole, our products are about making it easier and more fun to interact, whether sharing a meal, playing games, or just having a chat,” says Bethan Rayner of Studio Propolis, who lives and works with with her husband Naeem Biviji in Nairobi.
For Sarah and Jans Fager, their daily life during winter was the inspiration. “We have pictured our family using these objects to create an atmosphere in our home. You can easily move around with the products and use them all over your home, such as a
battery-powered lantern, a basket to carry wood logs and a floor pouf for low seating with kids.”
Some of our favorite pieces are the ones that focus on materials, like the round pouf that on first glance looks like leather, but is actually covered in plastic reinforced paper. “The material talks for itself, and it will change over time, telling the story of how it has been used,” says the Fagers.
Another instant classic is sure to be the basket, made of hemp rope and lacquered bent ash veneer. It’s a simple form that can work in a variety of spaces, to hold magazines or firewood both.
The collection includes 25 products that range in price from $2.99 for a set of cookie cutters to $129 for a flatwoven 5×7 rug.
