If you're renting, and you hate your kitchen, you may think you don't have a lot of options. But you are wrong! Even if simple updates like painting cabinets have been ruled out by your landlord, there are still things you can do to improve your kitchen — without forfeiting your deposit.

1. Change your hardware.
Hardware makes a huge difference in the feel of your kitchen, and it's easy to switch out (provided, of course, that you make sure the new hardware will fit into the holes from the old hardware).

2. Add some art.
The kitchen probably isn't the place for priceless paintings, but adding a little (inexpensive) art is a great way to dress up a boring kitchen.

3. Add a rug.
Yes, rugs in the kitchen can work — pick one with a low pile that won't catch crumbs and dirt, or just pick a rug that you can throw in the washing machine. There's no faster or easier way to add a lot of color to a boring (or just plain ugly) space.

4. Turn your cabinets into open shelving.
You can carefully remove a few cabinet doors (save the hardware!) to create a space to display some treasured items. Looking at them will make you feel better about the rest of your kitchen. This is also a great way to add some color — a stack of bright Fiestaware will perk up even the most cheerless kitchen.

5. Add a little shine.
Joy Cho of Oh Joy! added contact paper to the toekick of the cabinets in her studio space. You can choose to forego the stripes if you want and just stick with gold — you'll get just a little bit of shine, like the look of this kitchen but on a budget.
