Our Favorite International Home Brands That Aren’t IKEA
In case you missed it, this month at Apartment Therapy we’re celebrating what home means all around the world. Whether it’s through inspiring international house tours or picking up souvenirs on our travels, we’re taking a look at how global influences affect our spaces—and that includes the brands we shop as well. We rounded up some of our favorite brands from across the globe that we’re constantly shopping from—and not one of them is IKEA. This list is definitely not exhaustive, so please share any that we missed!
You’ve probably set foot in at least one H&M store in your life, but did you know that the Swedish brand also offers items for the home? We covered a few of our faves in this roundup, but the wide selection is worth reiterating. Home items range from bedding to kitchenware to candles, so there’s really something for everyone, and true to the brand, prices remain affordable.
Japanese company MUJI has a mix of minimalist clothing and essential products for the home, and you could easily spend hours browsing the website for fun finds. The storage section is particularly notable. Most items are budget-friendly and simple in design—you won’t find busy patterns or vibrant colors here.
English company Joseph Joseph is a go-to source for kitchen items, with a selection of cleaning and bathroom products available as well. This is a great place to browse for gifts for the chef in your life or to purchase something practical yet fun for yourself. Everything is functional and a little quirky, and you can also find Joseph Joseph products on sites like Amazon and Bed Bath & Beyond.
Danish design is universally lauded, and this furniture and decor source is not to be missed if you love the style. Danish Design Store offers authentic Danish-designed furniture, lighting, and decor, including pieces from Arne Jacobsen and Charles & Ray Eames. Prices are definitely steep, so this is more of a splurge-worthy source for those looking to invest in a high-quality piece.
Love entertaining? Be sure to make British-based Canvas Home your next stop for tableware, linens (you’ll need some extras for guests, after all!), and other decor. Styles are classic and minimalist, and make great picks for a wedding registry. Our Founder & CEO Maxwell Ryan even collaborated with the brand to create a collection of tableware.
Oh hey, Hay! Hay is another Danish furniture source we love, selling Scandi-chic goods that are a bit more reasonable than Danish Design Store. Their selection of accessories is particularly, offering a great place to start getting acquainted with Danish design on a smaller scale than a furniture piece.
