Selecting the best mattress for sleep usually becomes a priority when you aren’t getting any. It’s only when you’re tossing and turning, or staring at your bedroom ceiling at 3 a.m., that the importance of a good foundation truly comes into focus. But then, most people forget that they’ve made note of this fact as soon as they fall asleep.

There are many reasons to put off the purchase of a brand new mattress, and perhaps one of the most challenging ones is the cost. A fresh-from-the-box mattress is an investment, and it can be tough to part with that kind of cash — which is why so many folks sleep on ones that are far past their prime. But the more supportive and comfortable your mattress is, the more restful and restorative your sleep is going to be.

If you’ve been casually searching for a new mattress (like at 3 a.m.), then you’ve probably come across the brand named for a certain color. Purple’s mattresses have gained popularity in recent years after first gaining traction with a Kickstarter campaign in 2015. Since then, the company has launched a curated collection of products that support solid Zs, like mattresses with a grid-inspired composition and temperature-regulating pillows.

What is Purple?

About a decade ago, when direct-to-consumer brands were in the midst of a boom, founders and brothers Terry and Tony Pearce hoped to distinguish the comfort of Purple from their competitors with one technological detail: hyper-elastic polymer. This grid-like structure called GelFlex Grid, which resembles a honeycomb, is meant to provide a supportive cushion that responds more quickly to movements than memory foam while keeping its surface cool.

Another benefit? The Pearce brothers also touted that their grid-like mattresses distributed weight more evenly than those of their competitors as well, making those lumpy divots we’ve all experienced an unlikely detail of a Purple sleep routine.

What’s the difference between the three mattress collections?

Purple has three different mattress collections — Essential, Restore, and Rejuvenate — and each uses the company’s hyper-elastic polymer technology to different degrees; of course, each collection has different price points.

As a quick overview, the Essential collection includes three foam mattresses constructed with the brand’s grid-like structure for support and breathability. The Restore line takes it a step further with hybrid mattresses that combine Purple’s grid with a layer of responsive coils for even more support. Finally, the Rejuvenate collection features the best of the two previous collections, along with a quilted Euro top for maximum comfort.

There’s a helpful quiz to help you figure out which mattress is best for you, so you can play around before adding a mattress to your cart.

As for the similarities among the collections, there are several overlapping features. Every mattress comes with the aforementioned GelFlex Grid, the honeycomb of breathable support, and all are made with non-toxic materials. All orders come with a 100-day trial and a 10-year warranty, as well as free shipping and returns.

What else does Purple sell?

Purple’s catalog includes its mattresses as well as pillows, bedding, bed frames (including adjustable bases), and even seat cushions. The pillows and seat cushions are made of the same hyper-elastic polymer technology that defines the brand’s signature comfort, while the bedding and bed frames are meant to enhance the breathability and structure of that honeycomb grid, too. So it’s possible to fall asleep surrounded by the brand, and then spend some of your waking hours seated on its styles, too.

Are Purple mattresses expensive?

Purple mattress prices are comparable to other direct-to-consumer mattress brands, and there are steep discounts around major holidays — which we get into below.

When there isn’t a sale, the Purple Flex mattress, which is the company’s most basic design, is $1,299 for a Queen-size mattress, and the Purple RejuvenatePremier mattress, the brand’s most premium offering, is $7,495 for a Queen. While these mattresses certainly aren’t cheap, the wide price range does mean that there’s a mattress for every budget.

Does Purple have sales?

Yes, Purple has sales for most calendar holidays — like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the unofficial bonanza that is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Currently, Purple is running a Black Friday sale with discounts up to $700 on mattresses and up to $1,000 off a mattress and adjustable bed base. There’s also up to 20% off pillows, 20% off bedding, and up to 25% off bedding bundles. There’s no promo code needed for any of the deals, and there’s no end date to the sale either — you’d be well advised to not wait too long before checking out.

In addition to sales, Purple offers ongoing discounts for healthcare professionals, members of the military, first responders, truckers, and educators.

Does Purple have stores?

You can test out a Purple mattress in person at more than 3,000 store locations throughout the country, although it’s possible to get one delivered without ever leaving your house, too. Select the store nearest you here, if you’d like to be sure about your comfort before checking out.

Does Purple deliver?

Purple provides three different delivery options to choose from: standard ground shipping, in-home setup without removing a former mattress, and in-home setup with mattress removal. Standard ground shipping can take up to 10 days to arrive, and currently only takes place within the contiguous United States (shoppers in Hawaii and Alaska have to pay an additional fee).

Editor-in-chief Charli Penn tried out the Restore PremierHybrid model hoping that she’d get restorative sleep without lingering pain. “I suffer from chronic back pain,” she writes in her review. “One or two nights on a mattress with little or no extra support and I’m going to feel lingering stiffness and pain for days. This new hybrid mattress features superior pressure relief. I feel cradled from the start and supported where it matters most — my lower back, neck, and shoulders.” Feeling comforted and supported by a mattress is the ultimate goal.

Assistant editor Morgan Pryor has the classic Purple mattress, and was surprised by how much she loved it. “Even though it’s not fluffy, the bouncy foam allowed me to sink into it and feel supported at the same time,” she writes in her review. “I’m a combination sleeper, usually switching among all three positions throughout the night, and there hasn’t been any instance where I’ve felt uncomfortable.” For those who struggle to find a position where they can fall asleep easily, this is a huge win.
