My boyfriend and I moved into this space less than a year ago from two separate (much larger) apartments. We knew it was going to be time to downsize when our existing sofa couldn’t even fit through the door! Our new space is around 400 square feet and is technically a studio, though we’ve designed a curtain divider that splits up the space nicely.

We both have a more minimalist approach to design, but appreciate interesting objects. I work at an interior design firm so the pressure was truly on to create something we could be proud of.

The space has NO closets, so a majority of our bedroom space was taken up by freestanding wardrobes. We custom built a shelf in that area to really maximize the space and house our laundry. Another item that was built is the table to the left of the sofa that houses the litter box for our cat, Chef DJ Brandon. In such a small space, we couldn’t lose a side table!

Some favorite items in the apartment include the art (particularly the mugshots above the sofa and vintage nautical blueprints in the “entry way”) and our fireplace. It’s non-functioning, so we use it as a bookcase. Arranging the books with the spine in really gave it a more cohesive look. We also love our shadeless pineapple lamp that I’ve painted with copper spray paint.

The apartment has great light! Since it’s one big room, we went with sheer curtains that give just enough privacy without compromising the view.

Thanks, Jessica & Milo!
