This Is What Justina Blakeney Always Keeps On Her Nightstand
If you’re in need of boho inspo, look no further than Justina Blakeney. The Jungalow founder and author of The New Bohemians Handbook is known for her colorful plant-packed spaces—and the bedroom is no different. If you’ve ever wondered what the Los Angeles based designer always has on her nightstand, we’re about to make your dreams come true.
Blakeney revealed to One More Thing exactly what is always by her bedside—and it’s a healthy mix of pretty and practical.
If your goal is to drink more water, here’s one tip you can take from Blakeney: Keep a carafe on your nightstand. “I keep a carafe with water and a little cup because I get very thirsty during the night, and I try to drink a full glass of water when I go to bed at night and first thing when I wake up in the morning,” she says.
But if your side of the bed could use a little more clutter control, she’s got a solution for that, too. “I try to keep things around my bed looking really pretty,” she says. “I think a lot about how the first thing that you see can set a tone for the whole day, and same with the last thing before you go to bed at night. So I always try to make sure that items that I interact with immediately are beautiful, and a box helps me clear the clutter away. Before I go to bed, I’ll just put anything that’s junking up the area in there.”
She also makes sure her jewelry has a proper place—and occasionally something living: “I don’t like sleeping with a lot of my jewelry, so I’ll take it off and put it in there. Sometimes I’ll keep plants or flowers on my bedside but not always—I’ll shift them in and out.”
Plus, she always has something to read. “I’ve been trying really hard to not look at my phone first thing in the morning and last thing at night, so I’ve been plugging my phone in away from my bedside table and doing actual reading at night and sometimes in the mornings when I wake up earlier than my family,” she says. “I read shelter mags from all over the world. I love all of the UK and Australian shelter mags and French and Italian ones like Casa Vogue Italia. I also like business books. Right now, I’m reading The Myth of the Nice Girl by Fran Hauser. It’s about learning how to be a leader when you are an empathetic woman—that the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. I’ve really been enjoying it.”
