With her vintage floral wallpaper, natural wood beams, Victorian-inspired chandeliers, and claw-footed tub, Kate Hudson has become a queen for cottagecore fans. Her homey aesthetic makes for incredible Instagram posts and design inspiration, and if it’s not on your radar yet, Hudson latest post includes pattern mixing that needs to be front and center on your DIY to-do list.

On Oct. 21, Hudson posted a photo of her daughter Rani, decked out in a Pottery Barn Kids pumpkin hat, to her Instagram. And although Rani is definitely the star of the show here, Hudson’s tiled floor paired with her striped curtains definitely drew attention to themselves.

What makes this a success is the mixing of the patterns combined with the commitment to the black and white color palette. By keeping things monochromatic but varying in textures and prints, the patterned-mixed aesthetic looks clean and not so busy.

Hex with Flower Porcelain Mosaic Tile

The flooring in Hudson’s house is tiled in a black and white floral pattern using standard hexagon tiles. In fact, you can grab the same tiled pattern on Amazon, which comes in square sheet form.

She then installed pinstripe curtains in the same black and white coloring. These black and white pinstripe curtains from CB2 are a super similar match so you can get the look, too.

Pattern mixing can be a bit daunting to tackle at first. But, if you keep it simple as Hudson did with her black and white scheme, you’re on your way to being a pattern-mixing pro.
