Since we're all about kitchens this month, here's a showcase of a few keeping rooms — a term I recently learned. A keeping room is a small room off the kitchen, dating back to Colonial times. Families often slept there on cold nights because heat from the stove kept everyone warm.
Today we have radiators and central heating, but keeping rooms live on as cozy spots adjacent to the kitchen. Not quite a living room, not fully a dining room, a keeping room is a big selling point for Realtors as a way of serving up added space. Plus, it's nice to keep one eye on the TV while you're preparing the roast.
