That awkward space between upper kitchen cabinets and the ceiling can pose a design challenge. While letting it just be is an option many choose, others instead embrace the extra opportunity to showcase their style. And of course, for super small kitchens, using that space above the cabinets as storage is a necessity. Here are some inspiring examples of times this narrow, odd space was styled to perfection.

Display white or neutral-colored housewares

Phyllis and Bill's farmhouse-style home is filled with lots of white furniture and accents — such as these white kitchen cabinets pictured above. The couple says, "We love knick-knacks and collectibles, but if they aren't organized it can make a room look messy and chaotic." That's usually true, so Phyllis and Bill displayed their collection of all-white bowls and pitchers above the cabinets. Because they blend in perfectly with the white cabinetry and the white walls, the kitchen remains bright and harmonious without feeling cluttered.

...Or all-clear kitchen goods

Another option is to display clear housewares that take up minimal visual space, as Rian and Zeanne have done in their Cape Town home. Like in Phyllis and Bill's kitchen, the housewares blend with the wall and add a touch of elegance to the space, all while preserving valuable storage space inside the kitchen cabinets.

Add bold paint color

In typical New Orleans fashion, Tami's home in the Crescent City packs a punch with color in almost every room, and the kitchen is no exception. She painted the wall with Valspar's Twist of Lime paint to add contrast to the white cabinets and help define the kitchen space, which helps when the house features an open shotgun home layout.

Display prized collectibles

We fell in love with Salvatore and Amina's happy and colorful Los Angeles apartment because it showcases a ton of playful elements, such as this extensive collection of Care Bear and My Little Pony figurines. Placing them on top of the cabinets adds a cheerful vibe to the kitchen and creates an element of surprise to the otherwise overlooked kitchen nook.

Showcase art

Nicole and Dave love to create and collect art, but the walls of their Baltimore apartment can only hold so much. They looked to the gap between their kitchen cabinets and ceiling to help them display some of their most treasured pieces, including artwork from friends and some of Dave's own large-scale designs. Not only did this provide more options to inject their personality to the space, but it also allowed them to add color to the all black and white kitchen.
