Kosher Salt: Emergency De-Icer for Small Jobs

Normally you'll find buckets of pet-friendly ice melt inside my front door. Midwest Winters are brutal and I grew up with ice storms that shut down the city for days on end. Like a Boy Scout, I've always been prepared, but this year was different. This year, all we've had on hand is Kosher salt.

This Winter has been a weird one for the Midwest. Many parts have only seen a slight dusting of snow and have only seen ice once or twice. Instead of keeping buckets of ice melt on hand we've only had one small blue box and it's been perfect. This simple box of Kosher salt has been exactly what the doctor ordered as it sifts out thin enough from the box that it doesn't distribute a heavy layer of damaging salt and takes care of the thin slick coating prohibiting us from making it to our vehicles to get to work or the grocery store.

It's not ideal, of course, but it's been great to have on hand in an emergency kit and for those who might not require large amounts of salt for such occasions, I might encourage you to do the same. It's unobtrusive and is even great for those who might have landlords that are a little slow to get things cleared. Five minutes after application you're ready to roll out... you know, like Transformers.
