LaCie & Starck Mobile Hard Drive Collaboration

LaCie & Starck Mobile Hard Drive Collaboration

LaCie continues to bring out the star designer treatment, this time for a line of new hard drives designed by that lovable blowhard of iconic design, Philippe Starck. The aluminum sheathed USB hard drives come in two sizes and offer two notable features: Starck's signature symbol/design and a touch-enabled shiny front that allows for 1-touch application launching...

Our first Firewire external drive was a LaCie...a drive we still use to safe keep some of our files (with 2-3 copies elsewhere in case of eventual failure), so we'll vouch for their construction quality (all metal like these Starck drives). We 've always had a soft spot for Starck's design, though this one registers somewhere in middle of the cool factor; the light up Starck plus icon is a gimmick, but a nice branding touch; the drives are otherwise standard USB 2.0/480Mbits/s transfer rate devices.

But the smaller mobile version piques our interest further, with a handsome 2mm aluminum casing in slim form factor that looks tough enough for most mobile needs; the smaller dimensions give the drive a more elegant form factor the full size desktop model lacks.

The LaCie Starck Desktop Hard Drives are available for $130 for the 1TB version and $250 for the 2TB version, with a smaller The LaCie Starck Mobile Hard Drive in 320GB and 500GB versions ($100/$140)
