I’m Indecisive as Hell, But This Two-Sided Mattress Helps Me Sleep Easy
I don’t know about you, but I am a decidedly indecisive person. There’s no sweeter relief than avoiding decision making all together. Every time my roommate and I decide to grab a drink, we spend more time choosing a bar than we do at the actual bar. And I’m not an impulse shopper, I waiver back and forth for what feels like eternity before landing on a decision.
So, pulling the trigger on big ticket items is particularly difficult for me, so much so that I’ve been known to make terrible decisions in the end. Which is exactly what happened to me the last time I picked out a mattress. This was back in 2014 when I moved out of my first NYC apartment, which was fully furnished, and into a completely empty room. Spending a full day moving all of my belongings out of a fourth-floor walk-up into a second-floor apartment in a completely different borough was taxing enough, but I had a fever to top it all off. Suffice it to say I was not in a shopping mood when we finally made it to the mattress store.
I was, however, very much in a sleeping mood, so the pressure was on. I laid down on multiple mattresses at least three times each, but just couldn’t figure out what felt best. In the end, I picked the cheapest option and I’ve been unhappy with that decision for the past five years (so has my back TBH).
Plus, we’ve seen a huge surge in direct-to-consumer, bed-in-a-box brands that specialize in foam mattresses in the past few years, so my traditional mattress was starting to feel less than on top of it being uncomfortable. So, when I got the opportunity to test out Layla’s copper-infused foam mattress after their recent re-design, I jumped at the chance.
The biggest draw for me was the fact that the mattress is double-sided, featuring both a soft and firm option. Since I had so much trouble deciding on a comfort level last time around, the idea that I could try out both sides for extended periods of time to really get a sense of which was better for me was a huge relief.
And the dual-toned cover makes it super easy to figure out which side is which. The darker half is the firm side, while the lighter half is the soft side. I decided to test out the soft side first, and it was honestly like sleeping on a cloud. After a few weeks of solid sleep I decided it was time to check out the firm side, and enjoyed it a lot too, but the soft side wins out for me personally (at least for now). I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face the day, something the company prioritizes in its products.
I’m also a sucker for added value, so I loved the “welcome kit” that came with the new mattress. It includes a t-shirt, a handy opener to help you open the mattress itself, instruction cards, and a few stickers.
And while the brand also sells its own bed frame and foundation, I just set it up on top of the platform bed I already owned, and it worked out great.
Am I still indecisive? Yes. But am I satisfied with my mattress for the first time in what feels like forever? Also yes. But only time will tell how many times I switch back and forth between the two different sides.
