Bamboo Leaning Bookcase and Desk
One of Crate & Barrel‘s best sellers, the Leaning Bookshelf and Desk (one of our Top 5: Cheap Furniture Basics and Top 10: Writing Desks) is now available in bamboo. Made with bamboo solids and veneers, along with eco-friendly glues and particle board, this version of the popular and inexpensive storage solution is rated E-1 for low emissions. What does this mean?…
We’re still a bit perplexed but a little research revealed that this rating comes from the European Union’s voluntary system of emissions standards for furniture. Measuring the amount of chemicals (mostly Formaldehyde) used in the production process, furniture is ranked with “E numbers” from 1-5. While an “E-1” rating is for very low emissions and off-gassing, the “E-5” rating is for furniture with high emissions and off-gassing.
While we applaud the use of this system by Crate & Barrel (it is not required in the U.S.), it is easy to be cynical when the vast majority of their products do not include a rating at all! (It should be noted that the Mahogany and White versions of the Leaning Shelves and Desk make no mention of their “E” ratings.) As we become more aware and educated on the various systems of ratings and standardization (and what they really mean), we promise to share them with you. Does anyone else have knowledge of the E-ratings they want to share with AT?
