Now that coronavirus-caused homeschooling has come to an end, parents are finally phasing back into a very familiar time of year—how do I keep my child entertained for the entire summer season? And that anxiety is only heightened by the fact that most summer camps and activities have been put on hold this year due to the pandemic. But one father may have just solved every parent’s problem. Luanga Lue Nuwame came up with an interactive, life-sized board game for himself and his kids, and he made it entirely out of recycled cardboard.

On his YouTube channel Homemadegameguru, Nuwame—a wizard with cardboard—showed his viewers how he crafted his giant game board pieces, as well as how he came up with the rules of the game.

“I’m going to make a giant room-sized board game, not even room, warehouse-sized board game that’s also going to act as a game show that I want you guys to be a part of it,” Nuwame said in this March video.

Nuwame made octagonal-shaped cardboard game pieces, each with different actions and point-winning challenges attributed to them—dance-offs, chore challenges, and trivia are just a few of the activities Nuwame and his daughter partake in. To move amongst the pieces, each player rolls a giant dice and moves however many spaces they roll..

There is an infinite number of ways the game can be set up, and depending on the number of octagonal pieces you use, the game could last a few minutes, or a few hours.

Nuwame involves his YouTube subscribers in his game and has dubbed his virtual daddy-daughter tournament the Big Sunny Board Game Challenge. You can check out the tournament’s test play here:

Following Nuwame’s lead and creating your own life-sized board game with your kids can keep them entertained for days on end, and prizes can consist of treats like ice cream or getting to stay up an hour past bedtime. Creating the game is all about using imagination.
