We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: A Lodge cast iron skillet is about as perfect as cookware gets. Plus, Kitchn editors have consistently picked it out as the best cast iron skillet for home cooks. So when we spotted the 12-inch version for just $20 (normally $40) at Walmart, we obviously had to share the news. Lodge skillets are already inexpensive, but a deal is a deal, and this one right here is pretty darn sweet, especially for those looking to finally make the switch to cast iron skillets or add a new one to their repertoire.

So what makes the 12-inch version such a kitchen essential? For starters, it’s just the right size to easily accommodate five juicy burger patties for quick weeknight meals, a couple of steaks when you’re meal planning for the week ahead, a crusty cornbread for your barbecue guests, or even the fluffiest Dutch baby pancake for lazy Sunday brunches. Even better? It comes pre-seasoned, which means it’s ready to use right out of the box.

The skillet’s high sides make it perfect as a baking pan for cakes, biscuits, or cobblers. Plus, because of the depth, there’s plenty of room to heat oil for fried chicken or to simmer chili. It also can go from the stovetop to the oven and features a smaller helper handle that makes it easier to lift.

Like other Lodge skillets, the 12-inch version builds up patina over time, which means it gets better and better with every use and will pretty much last you forever. To clean, just rinse with warm water and use a brush or scraper to remove any stuck-on bits.

Ultimately, for the cost of four lattes, you’ll have a family heirloom you can pass down from generation to generation. But better hurry — this deal won’t last long!
