The Chick-a-Dee: A Design-y Smoke Alarm for Kids Rooms

Apartment Therapy first wrote about this avian take on the smoke alarm four years ago when it was just a concept and had won a European design award. So where has it been since then? It has been on the market in the Netherlands for a few years and we hope that spotting it at the ABC Kids tradeshow last fall means it is headed to the U.S. soon.

The first thing we thought when we saw the Chick-a-Dee was "Why hasn't someone thought of tricking out the smoke detector before?" Even though safety is of the utmost importance, it's still surprising to us that the basic and blah design of smoke detectors/alarms has changed very little over the years.

The designer behind the Chick-a-Dee is Louise van der Veld and we hope maybe her work will spur on others to think outside the UFO-shaped box, too.

In Europe, this can be purchased directly from the Chick-a-Dee website (€ 49,95) in five colors. We'll let you know when it becomes available in North America.

(We were reminded of the Chick-a-Dee by Li'l Magoolie)
