We used to store paintbrushes all over the house and could never find the right one when we needed it. But that was before we borrowed a clever organizing idea from the kitchen…

As much as we paint (a lot!), we had never put it together that the band holding the bristles was magnetic. Then many years ago we read an article in Martha Stewart Living Magazine about using magnetic knife strips to organize paintbrushes. Simply Genius. Magnetic Knife Racks are inexpensive, easy to install with two screws, and fit just about anywhere (we have ours next to the washing machine). You can get them at kitchen stores in many different lengths. You can also use them to store other painting tools including those free metal keys that open paint cans (ours is forever getting lost).

We're also mindful of a tip we've heard from painters — which is to hang paintbrushes with the bristles pointing down so that if your paintbrush is still wet, the dampness or water won't absorb upwards into the handle.

• IKEA has several inexpensive knife racks
• Ours was from Amazon and very sturdy like this one
