Most work areas are never truly clean because of all the paper traffic that continuously goes through them. And while we always push to be as organized as possible, you always need to stop somewhere and accept a comfortable level of messy (controlled, of course).
A fine example is the white workspace found on Emma's blog. It's a bit messy in some corners, but it's obvious the person living there is organized enough so that stuff isn't piling up everywhere. A good balance will keep you from going insane and having people think you're type of compulsive clean freak.
