Martello Tower Y

Is this dramatic Suffolk, England building of contemporary or ancient times? Does it function as a residence or a fort? Well, it's been all of these in its long history:

Owner and designer Duncan Jackson worked with Piercy Conner Architects to make this ancient defense tower into a home of the 21st century. Twelve-foot-thick walls enclose what is now a contemporary home with light tubes that bring daylighting into the depths of the spaces. Transforming such a formidable building into a livable home would be no easy task, and the hard work of these designers was recognized with Britain's prestigious RIBA award in 2010
