Get The Look: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Mid-Century Apartment

Have you seen Amazon’s series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Of course you have. The Golden Globes loved it. The Critics’ Choice Awards loved it. It just took home eight Emmys including Best Comedy Series, and season two is coming before the end of 2018. We don’t just love it because of the acting and writing; the production design is breathtaking. Throughout the first episode, I simply repeated, “I want to go to there,” a la Liz Lemon. How can we go to there? I’m so glad you asked.

The shell of the apartment is made up of pastel colors – robin egg blue in the foyer, cream in the living room and dining room, and peachy pink in the bedroom. Slather your walls in it. Make it into curtains. Get it in a rug. Fall in love with the softness, because we’re about to layer in florals.

Quite possibly my favorite thing about Midge’s apartment is the blush, floral wallpaper applied to the inside of her foyer wall moulding. If you have similar trim in your apartment, fill it with wallpaper right now. Stop reading this post and go do it. It’s elegant and flirty. It’s classic without being dated.

Another easy way to add florals is in your throw pillows. On Midge’s living room sofa, there are ten-plus throw pillows (I counted). Of those ten, about half are florals. But keep the color palette in the pastel world and flowers like those you would see in an English garden—this is not the place for Beverly Hills Hotel banana leaf. Lastly, put vases full of fresh flowers throughout.

Onto the big stuff. Midge’s furniture is mostly classic mid-century. Focus on the following: tables and storage pieces in white and dark wood with brass and bronze hardware. Simple, clean lines are the name of the game.

Then, there is the sofa. Midge’s curved, grey velvet sofa is the stuff of dreams. It’s a treat for your eyes and your butt. The darker color anchors the rest of the room. While I would absolutely purchase a curved sofa for my home, I understand it doesn’t work in everyone’s floor plan. If you’re going to pass on curved, look for traditional straight back sofas with soft edges and thin feet (ideally brass or bronze, but dark wood also works; run away from chrome).

Now, pepper in pops of red tones and antiques. Midge has a beautiful Chinoiserie mural folding screen and a red upholstered stool in the living room. Her bedroom curtains are deep maroon with white polka dots. The foyer houses a Regency-style mirror. These are your conversation pieces, so take your time and find things you really love and want to gush about.

Voila! Get yourself a dirty martini. You deserve it.
