- What I Love About My Small Home:
- By day, I'm a tax accountant who deals with numbers, rules, and regulations, but my tiny apartment is anything but buttoned up! Located just two minutes via skywalk from my high rise office building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, my studio apartment is located in the historic Fleming Building with a quirky mix of modern and historical features. I fell in love with the original sky high windows with a view of the gold dome of the State Capital Building and the modern loft design. I describe my design style as "hodgepodge" with dollops of whimsy and color. Every square foot counts in this tiny space, so each piece of furniture and object had to pass the test; is it functional or does it make me smile?
What would I use the prize money for in my apartment? I'd love a sofa and love seat upgrade to something more squishy and a coffee table with personality.
- Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
- Tips: In my tiny studio, I tried to let the the same color family flow from area to area. I think it makes the apartment seem larger and more restful.
I would also recommend being a ruthless editor of your stuff. If you love it, but it just doesn't work in your space, set it free or take it back to Mom and Dad's attic and beg them to store it for you. Someday you will have the perfect spot for it.
Get yourself to the store and buy a bed skirt. There is plenty of useful storage space under the bed and a dust ruffle does double duty: hides your junk and adds a soft touch to your sleeping area. While you're shopping, pick up some extra, extra long tablecloths - I used them as affordable curtains on my 120 inch high windows in this apartment.
