Name: Patricia ChaCha Garcia
Location: Bronx, New York
Size: 600 square feet
Years lived in: 9 years, renting
Patricia “ChaCha” Garcia has created her very own happy place in her New York City apartment. An avid vintage shopper, her space reflects years of collecting unique, vintage items and shows her ability to mix and match and maximalize, creating a style that is “very eclectic with a touch of bohemian and jungle.”
Her living room—home to several plants (including an olive tree), an original art piece portraying Frida Kahlo, and a (actual size) traffic light that she saved from the dumpster—demonstrates how to design a space with a lot of decor… and how to do it well. For Patricia, her whole apartment is a DIY project. She is constantly making and remaking her space by moving around and adding furniture and decor pieces to her home.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Very eclectic with a Bohemian flair and a touch of jungle
Inspiration: Everything artist/designer Justina Blakeney does.
Favorite Element: Do I need to pick just one? All of my one-of-a-kind finds and my plants.
Biggest Challenge: Keeping my plants alive and happy, especially the ones that need lots of light.
What Friends Say: Oooh my friends love coming over. They always say my place is homey, cozy, colorful, vibrant, unique, artsy.
Biggest Embarrassment: Being that this is an old building and a rental, the hallways are an eyesore, same as my front door. It is so ugly, but there’s nothing I can do about it, unless I move to a brand new building. But as soon as I step inside and I close the front door everything changes… it’s my happy place.
Proudest DIY: I think the whole apartment is a big DIY project to me. Adding my own spin and decoration style has made it look totally different from what a NYC apartment usually looks like.
Biggest Indulgence: I’m not sure if I have just one… I think there might be a few here and there (LOL). But I think one of my biggest indulgences are my plants. I’ve killed many of them and I’ve replaced them a few times but that has taught me how to take care of them.
Best Advice: Follow your instincts not the trends or what others say is “IN.” Decorate your home with what you love. I know it’s a cliché but it’s very true. If you want your home looking like a beach house during the winter time when it’s snowing outside, go ahead and decorate with seashells, white linen, palm trees, etc. I do it all the time.
Dream Sources: Anthropologie is my favorite dream place to shop for the home, from candles to pretty vases, although some of my big furniture pieces are from World Market.
