How We Saved Thousands (Really!) on Appliances for Our First Home
Sales and savings are cyclical, just like the seasons. If you’re looking to make big home purchases, the time could not be any better than right now.
Home sales tend to rise with the temperatures: more than 50% of Americans buy or sell a home in the summer months, according to Money. Which means that maybe quite a few of you, dear readers, are not looking forward to a long, languid Memorial Day weekend but rather to packing, schlepping, unpacking, and restoring a sense of domestic order in new digs.
Sure, you might not be out sipping frosé with friends at the hottest new patio bar and you might be having major FOMO stalking those same friends’ Instagram feeds, but you also could be saving beaucoup bucks on a new freezer or patio set that might make friends super jealous, too.
As my husband and I found out three years ago when we closed on our first house on May 31st, the timing could not have been better for doing some serious investing in less sexy major purchases like a refrigerator, HE washer/dryer set, and gas grill.
By combining Memorial Day Sales discounts and the others (such as Mother’s Day, Dads & Grads) that are all happening this month – not to mention buying from among the floor models and in the scratch-and-dent section – we managed to save thousands (not an exageration!). Which we then put toward all those al fresco deck drinks and fire pit parties to come once we were finally out of boxes and the pictures were hung on the walls. (OK, we may still be working on the last one…)
If, like us, you love to save money but are not the natural couponing and deal-stacking sort, however; WalletHub has you covered. The personal finance team has tracked various product categories for more than a year to identify which are the most heavily discounted merchandise in May compared with the rest of the year, and they just released their curated findings in this handy shoppable report.
Now excuse me while I run off and buy an above-ground pool for my backyard in Austin for less than the price of dinner and drinks for four in NYC.
