At the New York Tech Meet Up, Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched the Reinvent Payphones Challenge, where the city will accept proposals to better integrate the old technology into the urban landscape. Though underutilized, the antiquated phones were crucial to those in lower Manhattan during the Sandy disaster when cell service wasn't available; although the Mayor wants to see upgrades, a phone will always be a part of the plan.
