Location: Manhattan, New York

I recently purchased my first apartment and wanted to be able to seat up to six people for the occasional dinner party. However, like most New Yorkers, I don’t have space for a large dining table in my apartment. There are plenty of great convertible tables out there, but accommodating six chairs in my living room when the table was not in use presented a real challenge.

I was finally able to make it work by purchasing the Origami Drop Leaf table from Crate & Barrel ($699) and several Marius Stools from Ikea ($4.99 each.) I upgraded the tops of the stools by purchasing 12″ pine rounds from Home Depot ($9.38 each) and sanding and staining them to match the table. Similar stools often sell for over $100 online.

My makeover only took one day to complete and the total cost, with materials, for each stool was under $25. The result is a beautiful, affordable dining set that comfortably seats up to six people. Best of all, because the stools neatly fit under the table when not in use, the set takes up minimal space when guests aren’t over.

Thanks, Michael!
