Kathy and Peter recently left their 9-to-5 jobs to start a new business: a production company. Their home will become their office, so it needs to be at once a calming, productive space and a lively place to raise their 2.5-year-old daughter. In renovating her new home office, Kathy has to consider that she’ll be spending a lot of time in a space that can’t trigger her asthma.

Milestone Makeover: Kathy’s new home office
Location: Santa Monica, CA
Goal: To create a productive space for living and working
Problem: She has asthma, and spending times in toxic fumes triggers it
Solution: Natura® Zero-VOC* and Zero Emissions** Paint by Benjamin Moore® reduces her exposure to those triggers

“Leaving a job is scary enough,” says Kathy of her new beginning, “and deciding to work from home in a small space — you want to make sure it’s a fresh start.” She and Peter didn’t redecorate when they first started their new production company, but they soon made it a priority. If their surroundings weren’t beautiful and inspiring, their creativity would droop.

Changing the colors of their home and bringing order into it “changes your capacity of creative thinking,” said Kathy of their update. The two (now business partners) chose Palladian Blue HC-144 in matte by Benjamin Moore Natura for its “freeing” and “airy” atmosphere.

Their caveat for choosing paint was to find a brand with a zero-VOCs (volatile organic compounds) rating. The push for less toxic paints has come out of the complementary concerns for the environment (VOCs deplete ozone and create smog) and personal health (they’re also linked to respiratory illness). They were attracted to Benjamin Moore’s Natura line, which goes beyond being zero-VOC* to offering zero emissions** and no harsh fumes. What’s more, Natura has received an asthma & allergy friendly certification from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America for meeting its standards of having low odor, zero emissions,** and zero VOCs.* Kathy, who is asthmatic, says her “lungs are very grateful” to be living and working in less chemicals. And that security is doubly important when the office serves as a home, explains Peter: “There are a lot of things you don’t have control over when you have a two-and-a-half-year-old, so knowing their environment is a safe one means a lot.”

While creating its most environmentally safe paint, Benjamin Moore refused to compromise on performance and color. The result is the same durable, washable finish that is found across the whole brand and available in thousands of colors.
