Ventimiglia is now in talks to star in Fox 2000’s adaptation of The Art of Racing In the Rain, a 2008 novel by Garth Stein. The book’s narrator? An insightful and thoughtful dog named Enzo (yes, we’re crying already), who spends the book reflecting on life with his human owner, race car driver Danny Swift. Enzo has learned a lot about the human condition from Danny, and readers may find that they in turn have a lot to learn from this dog’s old soul. Worth noting: We assume Ventimiglia is looking to portray Danny, not Enzo.
We don’t want to give away too much of the plot for those who have yet to read the book (or for those who are heading straight to the movie), but safe to say, the novel’s poignant approach to understanding love, loss, success, and family through a dog’s eyes is enough to make you stock up on tissues before page one.
The movie rights have jumped around since 2009, when Universal originally began developing the adaptation with Patrick Dempsey at the center. That version stalled, as did one with Disney, but now Dempsey is a producer for the upcoming movie with Fox 2000, and we’re hoping this one sticks!
