Mindy Kaling Just Showed Off Her Latest Art Purchase, and It’s Gorgeous

Writer and actress Mindy Kaling took to Instagram on June 8 to show her followers the stunning new art piece she installed in her home. It’s a commissioned work from French thread visual artist Cecile Davidovici, and the details are just absolutely stunning. 

“In the depths of Covid last year, and what seemed like an endless quarantine, I commissioned this piece from @ceciledavidovici, an incredibly talented French artist I’d seen online,” Kaling captioned her Instagram post. “This looks like a painting of an Indian woman looking out at the ocean, but the rocks and woman are EMBROIDERY.”

She continued, “Cecile places her own unique spin on the medium of textiles by layering threads like a painter would with a paintbrush. Her work is completely breathtaking and I’m so moved every time I look at it.”

Over on her own Instagram page, Davidovici shared a few of her own shots of the piece, including the spools of thread she used to create the textured coastline and figure.

“This huge mixed media commission work was by far my most [ambitious] piece so far,” Davidovici captioned the post. “Thank you @mindykaling for the incredible opportunity to create something special for you.”

Davidovici usually works totally in thread and specializes in intricate, close-up portraits. From far away, her works look like oil paintings. But when you get up close, you can see the magic of her threadwork.

She sells her artworks through her website (as well as prints), and she even offers a virtual masterclass in embroidery, which can be downloaded for free.
