Modern Art Memory Game

Modern Art Memory Game

Memory is one of those enduring card game classics. I still have images from the Milton Bradley version from my youth burned into my brain. So if you're going to have kids commit images to memory (in some cases, for life), why not expose them to something beautiful and educative? Say, the ageless works of renowned modern artists for example.

AMMO'S Modern Art Memory Game is the latest addition to their line-up of top-notch quality Memory games. At first I wasn't sure we'd enjoy it as much as their Charley Harper version (a household favorite, which we've owned for several years now). But my son immediately liked the change up, and I soon realized there were two aspects of memory at play – one, hunting down the matching pairs, and two, identifying the artist, name of the painting, and year each work was completed (information supplied in an included foldout booklet).

If you haven't played Memory with your kids, you might be in for a surprise. Kids possess astounding powers of recall. When my four year old is in the "zone," I don't stand a chance. Plus, it's immeasurably entertaining hearing your kid declare they've just discovered the match for Josef Albers' Homage to the Square, or Kandinsky's Composition 8.

The box includes 72 made to last, board book quality cards (sturdy enough for a teething one year old). And depending on the age of the players, or the amount of time you want to invest, you can play with as few as 9, or as many as 36 pairs of cards. All said and done, it's a game for the whole family, and a great introduction to art history.
