Last week we were pondering bedside table alternatives, among them the very simple solution of placing a chair beside the bed. A chair provides a flat surface and even a place to hang a robe or extra blanket; the only thing it's missing is a drawer for clutter control and privacy. Fortunately, chairs with drawers, if somewhat rare, aren't totally unheard of. Here are a few, along with some tips for searching for more if you like the look...
Storage chairs were more popular in the past than they have been in the modern era, so searching for a vintage or antique chair with a drawer is one good bet. If you like a masculine look, try a "valet chair," which usually includes a drawer under the seat and sometimes a hanger for a suit jacket on the back. Valet chairs often have padded seats, but these can be easily converted to flat surfaces, suitable for your glass of water and bedside lamp.
In fact, we would imagine that by enlisting a friend with carpentry skills, installing a drawer in a side chair might be quite a doable DIY hack. Has anyone tried this?
Whether you're considering this as a DIY project or looking to find a ready-made storage chair for your bedside, these options might inspire you:
• 3 The Mini-Drawer Chair from Offi is actually designed for kids, but its scale would be great next to a low platform bed (or, indeed, as a kids' nightstand). $149.
• 4 This lovely little vintage Chinese-style chair with a drawer below the seat is on sale at Horchow for $187.90.
• 5 Some funky inspiration for a DIY storage chair from Osian Batyka-Williams. We love the idea of cobbling a bedside drawer chair together from discarded furniture.
• 7 Traditional hand-crafted Orkney Chair from the Orkney Furniture Maker in the UK. The designer grows his own straw to weave into the seats and backs. This child's chair, probably about the right size for a bedside table, runs about $810.
Let us know if you've tried this as a DIY project or Ikea hack... we'd love to see pics!
