In its annual Bathroom Trends Study, Houzz, a website dedicated to home design and remodeling ideas, found that the majority of homeowners who remodeled their master bathrooms in 2020 went with a modern style. In fact, 89 percent of homeowners who redid their bathrooms changed their styles completely during renovation, with 20 percent of these homeowners choosing to go for the clean-line, simple, and monochromatic aesthetic.

Modern-style bathroom renovations were also big in 2019, but the modern trend has jumped by 5 percent in comparison to 2018 renovation data Houzz collected. And more specific style choices show that modern bathroom design is taking the lead and not letting go any time soon.

Houzz found that the top color choice for vanities, countertops, and walls (both shower walls and non-shower walls) in 2020 was white, with gray being a close second-favorite hue.

“More than half of homeowners (51 percent) choose white countertops and the majority opt for white walls both inside and outside the shower (45 percent and 32 percent respectively),” the Houzz report reads. “The most popular accent wall color is white (23 percent), up from 15 percent in 2019, though interest in blue accent walls is on the rise (19 percent, up from 16 percent in 2019), suggesting some renovators are expanding beyond neutrals.”

Furthermore, modern bathroom features like floating vanities increased in popularity by 4 percent, and 65 percent of homeowners upgrading their bathroom sinks opted for streamlined undermount models.

The least popular bathroom styles renovators went for in 2020 were traditional and farmhouse, with beige, browns, and blues being the least-chosen color palettes. But hey, when it comes to crafting your perfect bathroom space, you do you, whether that’s modern, contemporary, farmhouse, or eclectic.
