This Is the Most Popular Holiday Movie in Your State
If watching Christmas movies is part of your family’s holiday TV traditions, you’re far from alone, because people across the country have their favorites. Maybe you’re a fan of the requisite cheesy (and ever-growing) offerings on Hallmark, Lifetime, and Netflix, or perhaps you’re a purist for the classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street.” Or maybe you like more nontraditional picks, like “Die Hard” and “Edward Scissorhands.”
Turns out, no matter which holiday movies hold a soft spot in your heart, you’re sure to be in good company. Consumer site Comparitech explored the most popular Christmas movies by state, sharing their findings based on IMDb’s top 50 most popular picks. They then analyzed the data by searching each film individually on Google Trends to determine which state showed the most love for each movie from the list.
Some states favor more obvious picks: the top choice in Connecticut, naturally, is 1945’s “Christmas in Connecticut.” But recent releases weren’t ignored: residents of Hawaii and Minnesota, respectively, love “Noelle” and “The Knight Before Christmas,” both released in 2019.
There are definitely some unconventional choices, too. Nevada residents seem to love “Bad Santa,” which feels fitting for Las Vegas’s home state. “Die Hard” reigns supreme in three states (Washington, Alaska, and Nebraska), despite an ongoing debate about whether the 1988 film even counts as a holiday movie. Residents of California and Rhode Island love “Edward Scissorhands,” and those in New Mexico firmly put “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in the Christmas camp—though it’s entirely possible they love watching it around Halloween, too.
