Mount a Desk Lamp on the Wall to Save Desktop Space
Is your office desk space getting a little tight? It’s time to move all the non-essentuials out of the way. First use the breadbox test to eliminate clutter. Then, if you still need a little more elbow room, try moving your table lamp to the wall. Really!
Rachel and Tyler (of the adorable blog Raenovate) showcased their newly re-styled office on IKEA Hackers. The most unique feature? A work lamp brought up from the desktop and mounted to the wall.
Rachel and Tyler removed the bottom piece and weight from the base of IKEA’s Barometer Work Lamp ($49.99) and wired it to the electrical box in their wall. Then, with a few toggle bolts, they positioned the lamp on the wall above their desk. Now they’ve got great office task lighting that is controlled by the room’s light switch and doesn’t take up any room on the desk.
The desk sconce is not an entirely new concept. But if you can’t find just the right wall-mounted office lighting for your style, it’s nice to know that there’s a DIY solution.
Plus, the idea of wall-mounting an office task lamp can transition to other rooms, as well. Splatgirl from Modern in MN took a pair of $8.99 IKEA desk lamps and mounted them to each side of her sofa as living room wall sconces.
