Move Over Tesla, IKEA Wants to Be the New Affordable Solar Solution

Move over Tesla Roof, IKEA wants to be the new affordable solar option proving that sustainability shouldn't be a luxury — helping millions of consumers convert their rooftops into power stations through solar panels, and storing more of that energy through a new home battery pack solution starting at around $4,000.

As designboom reports this week, IKEA has teamed up with solarcentury to offer homeowners in the UK and Ireland with a new solar battery storage solution, designed to rival that of Tesla's forthcoming Powerwall (debuting in 2018).

IKEA's battery pack says it is capable of working with existing solar panels or as part of a brand new combined system, and the technology claims to cut electricity bills by up to 70%. With the home storage packs, users can store the sun-sourced energy in their home and use the power on demand, bringing their energy use from solar up to a projected 80% from the current average of 40% by existing solar customers in the UK and Ireland, who right now send the unused energy — 60% of what they are collecting from their solar panels — back to the national grid, versus of storing it for their own personal household use later on.

In this video released by IKEA, the brand known for making everyday items affordable to the masses claims that "sustainability shouldn't be a luxury" and sees solar power as the universal utility of the future. Brand representatives say that the mega-retailer aims to double the amount of solar energy used by solar customers, starting in Europe.

"At IKEA, we're always looking for ways to help customers take positive actions at home for both the environment and their wallets," Hege Saebjornsen, country sustainability manager for IKEA UK & ireland, said in a statement. "With energy bills already going up 15% this year, there's never been a better time for customers to take back control of their electricity bills and maximize their savings by switching to solar and solar storage."

Meaning that, even taking initial setup costs into consideration, the average homeowner's utility bills would be drastically reduced. Here's hoping they make it to the US market next. According to Architectural Digest, IKEA has already installed more than 700,000 of its solar panels worldwide, and is on track to become an energy-neutral company by 2020.

"Unlike many of IKEA's products, the service, which starts at around $4,000, includes installation, making it easier than ever to be more environmentally conscious without killing your spouse over a hard-to-read instruction manual," one AD writer quips this week.
