Musical Keyboards For The Amateur Pianist

We have seen our share of iPad apps for playing piano and keyboard; but due to the lack of feedback and limited space, these apps really lack of what a physical keyboard can achieve. Let's take a look of these small desk keyboards that can be hooked to a computer for adding even more fun.

Casio Privia PX3
This is a true portable keyboard, at only 23.4 pounds, you are going to be able to haul this one everywhere. We love that the sound is pretty realistic and comes with additional 250 hi-end sounds for special effects and additional instruments. Total MIDI control, so you don't have to compromise between size and sound. It has Casio's Ivory Touch, which is a tri-sensor scaled hammer action, to replicate a real piano as much as possible.

M-Audio Venom Synthesizer
This 49 key M-Audio combines the true character of a classic analog synths with the modern digital processing, delivering great new sounds: From atmospheric and subtle to hardcore dance master! The user interface is great and the keys are velocity sensitive, so you will get instant finger feedback while you are playing. The included Vyzex Software editor, lets you visualize all the parameters and settings, letting you tweak and modify them as you wish, so you can create unique and original masterpieces.

Yamaha KX8 USB Keyboard Studio
The Yamaha KX8 midi controller is compatible with USB bus power, and can be simply plugged into a USB port and used without a separate power adaptor. The Yamaha KX8 was designed to support creativity and MIDI music composition without getting in the way. Therefore, it is very simple and there are not many features on this keyboard. It has a nice little built in menu though, aside from adjustments for the ARP function and a selection of 5 velocity curves. There is an interesting place in the menu where it enables you to choose which DAW you intend to use, including Cubase AI, Sonar, Logic, and a few others. The knobs, buttons and wheels are solidly built and you get nice crisp feel when you press on the various buttons on the front panel.
