Name: Steph Morgan Online home: Modern Parents Messy Kids My favorite children's book and why I love it: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. As a kid I found this book so empowering. I'd never read anything before that paid such respect to children's emotions. I just loved the hilarious way it addressed the fact that children have stress in their lives too. As an adult the continued references to Australia still make me smile.

We're celebrating books all week long and, once again, we've asked some of our favorite bloggers about their favorite children's book, illustrator and more. Read on…

My children's favorite books:

C (almost 3): Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton. My son has a very typical little boy obsession with construction vehicles. We love this book because (unlike many others) the steam shovel is an actual character (Mary Anne - how sweet is that?). This 1939 classic also has all kinds of interesting throwbacks like the page that starts, "Now the girl who answers the telephone called up the next towns...".

S (14 months): Night-Night, Baby! by Emma Dodd. We read this to S every night before bed just as we did C (in fact, it's the same copy) so it has sentimental value for our family. It's also the perfect first book for babies in that it's not too long, rhymes, has stuff to touch and feel, and has lots of sleeping baby pictures to get them in the mood for bed.

An illustrator I adore: Jill McElmurry. We found her when my son received Little Blue Dump Truck as a gift from his godfather. There's something very endearing and sweet about her vintage style characters, especially the little blue truck and the little girl in I'm small. Her images fill up the pages and her use of deep, saturated color makes me want to frame them for wall art.

If my life were turned into a children's book the title would be: The Modern Mommy Who Learned to Play.

Thanks Steph!
