My Room: Lawson

My Room: Lawson

Casey threw down the (medieval) design gauntlet with this clever theme room for her son: My 4-year-old son, Lawson, fell in love with knights and castles recently and since I'm a history teacher who loves medieval topics, I was thrilled to create this "big boy" room for him.

I wanted to create something that looked authentic, but not too scary since he's only 4. I also wanted to do this relatively inexpensively. I found an idea on the IDEA Hack website I liked, but combined other ideas I had with that general concept to come up with this final product that Lawson loves and that cost a fraction of most decent ready-made castle beds.

I bought an IKEA KURA bed and with the help of my dad and his power tools, we cut out MDF to make the fascade and bolted it onto the KURA frame. My seamstress mom, who owns an embroidery business, tackled the curtain to create a fun play space underneath. IKEA moon and star lamps light up the area nicely and are easy for him to turn on and off.

I painted the shield on the wall with fun stencils I found at Hobby Lobby, found the foam eagle shield at Target and bought the UK Royal Standard flags online. My mom sewed the medieval banners and I decoupaged 2 lightswitches (using clip art on Word) to round out the details. The bed is quite large for the room and so I had difficulty taking pictures since I could only back up so far to get things into the frame...

Thanks Casey!
